Illmotion Sunday School: Year Ten
I’ve been digging up the archives deep within my external hard-drive and I’ve decided “that it - I’m starting a blog.” I wanted a space where I could share photos and ideas from events and projects that I’m currently working on, or have worked on in the past. I have so many photos that have never been shared, or usually only share a small sample on Instagram.
To commemorate my first blog post on my blog, I thought that Illmotion’s tenth annual Sunday School would be a great place to start. As many local Calgarians know, the annual Illmotion Show and Shine (later on dubbed Sunday School) was the show to be at. The group behind the show had done an amazing job over the years to promote and facilitate a car show that hosted and welcomed a diverse group of tuners ranging from everything to Hondas and Ferraris, and from motorcycles to trucks. This is a family-friendly event with an amazing atmosphere provided though music, food trucks, and great people who all share the same love and interest in cars. I don’t recall how many vehicles showed up, but it felt like it had to be around the 400 mark - a true testament of how large this show was. I think their first annual show had maybe 50 cars.
I tend to try and enjoy my time at the show and don’t actually spend too much time nor dedication to taking photos, as there is usually a ton of great coverage from other individuals. I do wish that I had made more time to capture additional shots as there were a countless number of amazing vehicles on display that I know had many hours of dedication put into them. Something I will need to be more mindful of come future events…
A large majority of my photos were shot primarily in portrait as I usually only share photos on IG, however that will have to change in the future for the sake of desktop browsing…
Here is some coverage of Illmotion’s tenth annual and last Sunday School 2022 of just a small sample of things that caught my eye. Better late than never, right?
Clean 240SX on what looks to be on some vintage Volk Racing EMU-SP0’s.
Also powered by a Toyota 1JZ. I wish I got a photo of the full car - if my memory serves me right, it was a pretty stock/OE+ looking. Complete sleeper.
RHD Nissan S13 with a nice touch on the smoked tail lights. I love this body style. This car apparently is part of the Mexico Racing League. Never heard of them…
Exceptionally well executed ISF. For me, nothing beats clean black paint.
Rio Yellow S2000 sitting on SSR Type-C RS.
Great lineup of Civics from this group - high rollers.
Immaculate A70 targa top Supra. The attention to detail is top tier. Easily one of my favourites from the show.
Engine bay fully shaved and tucked. Hardware and bracketry all looking fresh. Nothing missed.
Another angle of the front half of the engine bay. I don’t know much about these A70, but one does not need to know much in order to appreciate the creative vision and effort that this owner put into their vehicle.
Perfectly spec’d MK4 Supra. The SSR MS1’s in this finish compliment (SSR Super Black Coat, maybe?) the silver paint so well. The Supra has a timeless look despite being a thirty year old design. I don’t think these will ever stop turning heads - at least mine, anyway.
Hard flex over at the VS One Automotive line-up. Terry’s Mugen ITR is an easy favourite for me, being an Integra fan boy. The other vehicles with this group are also top notch and executed with perfection in mind.
Three pretty best friends.
This turned out to be one of my favourite captures that I got from that day. This downtown lot provides such a great backdrop from the neighbouring buildings. The SODO residential building in the background provided a nice contrast of colours to the cars.
I’m sure all the Honda fan boys can appreciate this interior as this is a true EK9 Civic Type R. The lengths we go here to try and replicate this interior, from the red recaros, carbon fibre cluster, to the matte grey parking brake button…
There were simply some things that never could be swapped over to a LHD vehicle properly as they simply were never made. Things like the matching aluminum dead pedal, red capets, carbon fibre climate control, just to name a few…
Very cool to see one in person. I remember coming back to this one a few times.
Garage Box’s EK Civic sporting some really nice upgrades. Spoon brake calipers, Mugen strut tower brace, J’s Racing intake, JDM headlights… So good.
Sporting some blue Advan RG II’s and an OG Speedtech decal. Peep the NeXT Miracle X-bar.
Another angle of the red EK. I didn’t realize until now, but it also looks like it’s equipped with a Mugen twin loop exhaust.
Also part of VS One Automotive’s group, this gang of Hard hitters. I would not mind a bagged Audi RS3…
RS3 just laying on the ground.
Jason’s Civic Type R, looking good as always.
Dave’s Spoon themed Integra and Civic parked alongside this blue EG Civic. Classic.
Another angle of Dave’s Integra, after he popped the hood to show off more goodies from his Spoon catalogue.
Twinning and winning.
Fake Hero’s Nissan S15 sitting on some Advan GT’s. I enjoyed seeing the “fan service” livery on this car.
Said “fan service” livery. It was difficult getting a full length shot given there were so many cars in attendance and were therefore parked closely together.
Wonder if this livery has caused any accidents from onlookers. At least one nose bleed.
Spent some time at the Fake Hero booth checking out their artwork and merch that they had on sale. They had a bunch of cool anime inspired things for sale, like this one tucked away on a hood vent.
We’re starting to see more of these small businesses come up at car shows and I’m all for it. I love seeing local artists come out and do their thing.
Phoenix Yellow FK8 Civic Type R also rocking the Advan GT’s and a Varis rear spoiler. These wheels are seemingly becoming quite a popular choice amongst many.
I think the intention of the ramps were to show off the exhaust from underneath, perhaps? Unfortunately due to spacing between cars, it was hard to get under to really see anything. I didn’t bother to check myself.
Upfront, you can find this FK8 fitted with the Varis-Arising II bumper and hood. I personally find this front end to be more visually appealing over the more popular Spoon bumper for FK8. Also inside the cabin are a matching pair of Bride A.i.R bucket seats. Great looking FK8.
The heart of this NSX on display with ITBs’ through the rear glass of Jackie’s Acura NSX.
Josh’s E90 M3 parked alongside Alex’s E92 M3 and E39 M5.
Rhys’s track E92 M3 parked beside Mike’s track FD RX7 in the Alpine Motorwerks section.
This Ferrari F335 on Work Meister S1 2P’s looked incredible. It had a crowd around it all day long. I never managed to capture the entire car, so instead here is a close up of the wheel with the iconic prancing horse.
Widebody Seeker kit on this FD Civic in this eye-catching orange colour.
One from the rear.
Second gen Tacoma looking really sharp on this set of bead-lock converted SCS F5’s and King Suspension. Full armour all around looking very off-road capable. This one was with The Gear Shop.
The backside of the Tacoma. CBI dual swing out rear bumper with a 5th bead-lock spare… Super nice truck.
Porsche 930 also with The Gear Shop.
A Nardo Grey RS6 is a dream daily driver. I’m not too familiar with this wheel, but it’s a nice choice against Nardo Grey and with Audi’s Carbon Ceramic brakes behind them.
This Nissan Z31 had a ton of character and was phenomenal shape considering it’s vintage. I’m unsure if this is a factory colour, but I do enjoy it.
Steering wheel somehow seemed appropriate - not sure why.
Suitable set of RS Watanabe 8 spoke wheels.
Subway employee in the back also admiring the stance on this Z31 (I think).
Varis Ultimate rear bumper with rear diffuser on this GR WRX STi.
I believe it was fitted with Varis all around.
OG EM1 Civic. This car has been around Calgary for a while, but it’s always a treat to see it.
EK on Formula Silver TE37 and Project Mu brakes. This car is also equipped with many other goodies, such as; Backyard Special front bumper, JDM headlights, J’s Racing hood, Tracklife Composite fenders, just to name a few…
Tim has the most comprehensive EG Civic put together with only the best quality and rarest parts.
Another angle of Terry’s ITR, highlighting the Mugen Gen 2 wing, UKDM license plate extension, and optional ITR rear valances. I also love the colours in this photo.
Full shot of the EK9 Civic Type R.
I love EKs’ and this one is perfect.
This EG Civic on display with an immaculate engine bay powered by a K20A with a mass assortment of top quality parts. Even the hardware was looking fresh out of the package. That hood latch even looks better than they did from factory. No corners were cut here.
Voltex Equipped Evo X with Volk Racing 21C in the best bronze - Almite (OG) Bronze
Looks to be a Personal x Bride collaboration steering wheel, that shares the Neo Grinta shape. Signed as well, although I’m not sure who, but I would assume by the president of Voltex - excuse my ignorance. I never knew these existed.
Came back around to visit this S2000 again. Fitment looks great. I need an S2000 in my life someday.
Looking down the alleyway of VS One Automotive…
Midnight Purple R34 Nissan GTR with TE037 wheels. Iconic.
Opposing it was this Black Pearl R34 with Blast Bronze TE37 Saga S Plus wheels.
37” Maxxis MT’s mounted on BRAID beadlock wheels on a Merc G-Wagon. Must feel good to be a gangsta.
A Honda F20C powers this AE86 Corolla.
Subaru WRX STi on Volk Racing 21C. Loving this colour combo. Guy in the back is calling his friend to come check out this Subaru (probably).
I think it scrapes… Funny sticker placement.
Another minty Honda Classic. This CRX is in showroom condition.
Another close up of the F335 to show off some of it’s body lines.
Long Beach Blue Pearl NSX. Quite rare - at least this is the first one I’ve seen in person.
TE37Vs looking right at home on this Rocket Bunny FRS by Garage 111.
Can never go wrong with bronze on blue… For how good ZE40s look, I’m surprised that they aren’t more popular amongst the tuning crowd. Really diggin’ this Subaru.
A pair of JDM legends both rocking TE37s. Great colour combination on both of these cars.
Another JDM legend - this one looked to be Z-tune spec’d.
It was cool to see all of the R34s at the show considering they are still quite rare and seemly harder to acquire now. All of them in great shape as well.
Illmotion awards were so incredibly well done (pretty much, like everything else) this year. What a cool show-piece to have, and something I’m sure the winners are proud to display.
That wraps up my coverage of the show, which highlights probably only about 5% of everything that was in attendance. As mentioned earlier, I didn’t dedicate to much of my time taking photos and instead decided to be present and enjoy my day with good company. It’s nice to have an archive to look back on, and in hindsight, should have taken more time to capture pictures as this was the last opportunity with Sunday School. I’m not sure when we will be able to attend or witness another local show at this scale.. I guess we will have to wait and see if there will be another person or group to take on the reigns and carry on the legacy, or perhaps start a new one…
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading. It’s been fun putting this first blog post together and I’m looking forward to sharing even more in the future.
